What SERVPRO of Southeast Tucson Does When We Find Asbestos Materials During Remediation
Asbestos is a harmful mineral that was processed and used for construction through most of the 20th century. Asbestos is known to cause dangerous health conditions such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, which is why it is outlawed from use today. However, it is possible to find Asbestos-based materials inside homes that are old enough, as Asbestos had not been outlawed at the time of construction and could still be freely used. Upon finding materials made with Asbestos, it is essential for immediate removal to occur. Here at SERVPRO, we took the responsibility to remove the dangerous material upon ourselves.
Jonathan, an employee of SERVPRO of Southeast Tucson, comments that his team found Asbestos materials during a job. "Upon this water loss, after drying it out, we did find that there was some Asbestos materials....underneath the tile, which we removed." Knowing the danger of Asbestos, he had his team of technicians prepare themselves adequately for the job.
The technicians are covered head to toe with safety wear and never touch the material directly. However, here at SERVPRO, we also care about the protection of the rest of the home, as it is our job. Jonathan explains that they have "two chambers set up for the section of the house...we have negative air set up with plastic barriers around the walls to protect the environment from the Asbestos materials that could possibly float into the air."
They use a liquid solution to wet the tile and make it easier to pry up. As our SERVPRO technicians remove the tile, they bag them in industrial quality garbage bags. To ensure that no Asbestos materials escape, they tie the bag and then reinforce the knot with duct tape.
